Nationwide exchange rate for international transfers

When you send a payment overseas with Nationwide, your money is converted by a third party provider. This exchange rate is updated regularly throughout the day and includes a 2.2% fee.

It’s important to look carefully at the exchange rate used when you send a payment overseas. Where exchange rates include a fee, this can add up very quickly on higher value payments. The costs you pay in the exchange rate may far exceed the 15 GBP transfer fee you’re charged,

Not all providers use an exchange rate markup. Some, like Wise, offer the mid-market rate with a fee which can be as low as 0.48%.

Is Nationwide safe for large amount transfers? 🔐

Yes. Nationwide is safe for large amount transfers. If you’re sending a payment online you will need to verify the transfer using your banking app or your card reader. If you make your payment in a branch you’ll need to show your Nationwide current account card, a valid passport or full driving licence, and a proof of address. This helps keep your account safe.

Nationwide transfer limits

The Nationwide transfer limits depend on the type of payment you want to make. Here’s a summary:

Nationwide transfer limits

International payment

No limit

UK payment online

100,000 GBP per payment and per day

UK payment in branch

25,000 GBP per payment and 100,000 GBP per day

There are some situations in which your online payment limits may be reduced. For example, if you’re sending a payment to a new payee, or to someone you’ve not paid often, you might only be able to send 25,000 GBP online. This will mean you need to split your payment, or send your money over several days.

Alternatives to Nationwide with higher transfer limits

Nationwide customers can also choose to send their international payment through a specialist service. You’ll still pay from your Nationwide account, but using a specialist can lower the overall costs by getting you a better exchange rate or a lower transfer fee.

Here are some alternatives to Nationwide which might have higher transfer limits and lower overall costs, for you to compare.
